MADISON: Amateur men’s teams from Sturgis, Madison, and Rapid City claimed championships at the South Dakota Amateur Basketball Association state basketball tournament in Madison this weekend.
In the “C” Division, Sturgis Legendary Electric outlasted Eagle Butte 78-62 behind 18 points from Tyler Hohenberger and 17 points from tournament MVP Ryan Garland. Blake Proefrock and Laban Clement added 15 and 11 points, respectively for the champions. Eagle Butte got 14 points from Tyler Ogle and 12 from Nate Peterson. Joining MVP Garland on the class “C” All-Tournament team were Hohenberger, Proefrock, and Clement from Sturgis, Ogle and Trenton Pretty Weasel from Eagle Butte, Zach O’Keefe from Parker, Braden Carmody and Braydon Brandreit from Watertown, and Caleb Kemeick and Ryan Krog from Elkton.
In the “B” Division championship, host Madison took down Mt. Vernon 103-81 behind 28 points from tournament MVP Tyler Tappe. Madison also got 21 points from Cody Brown, 13 apiece from Brady Wiebe and Andrew King, and 12 apiece from Kellen Benck and Jordan King. Mount Vernon was led by Deric Denning’s 17 points and 15 apiece from Reed Rus and Chase Arend. Joining MVP Tappe on the Class “B” All-Tournament team were Brown and Benck from Madison, Skyler Bloch and Phillip Millar from Mt. Vernon, Jay Huls and Andrew Siemensma from Sioux Falls, Jordan and Jared Vlastuin from Lennox, and Falcon Albers from Brookings-Astoria.
In the Class “A” championship, Rapid City OCETI narrowly defeated Rapid City We Are Farmers 90-85 behind 26 points from Jesse Heart. Eric Swiftwater added 22 points, while Austin Kirkie and tournament MVP Mackenzie Casey added 17 and 10 points, respectively. Rapid City We Are Farmers got 17 points from Solomon Bach, 16 points from Adam Templeton, and 12 points apiece from Steven Schaefer and Cedric Collinge. Joining MVP Casey on the Class “A” all-tournament team were Kirkie and Heart from OCETI, Templeton and Schaefer from We Are Farmers, Kevin Ratzsch from Sioux Falls We Grind, Logan Doyle and Darin Peterka from Sioux Falls Invisible Fence, and Kyle Wiesner and Dustin Tetzlaf from Watertown Foothills Contracting.
Host Madison defeated the Brookings-Astoria Bulls 115-86 in their first game of pool play behind 29 points from Kellan Benck and 27 points from Tyler Tappe. Brady Wiebe added 16 points, Andrew and Jordan King each chipped in with 12 points, and Cody Brown rounded out the double digit scoring with 11 points. Brookings-Astoria got 28 points from Falcon Albers, 16 points from Malik Herman, 13 from Thomas Geraets, and 10 from Jordan Nelson.
In Madison’s second game of pool play, they defeated 2023 “C” champion Sioux Falls Avalanche 106-73 behind 25 points from Tyler Tappe, 21 points from Andrew King, 17 from Brady Wiebe, 15 from Jordan King, and 12 points from Kellan Benck. Tom and Ben Kahler rounded out Madison’s scoring with 4 points apiece. Sioux Falls got 18 points from Jay Huls, 15 points apiece from Brandon Feterl and Andrew Siemensma, and 12 points apiece from Brad Buck and Nick Siemensma.
